Indications

Natural somatostatin metabolizes too rapidly; synthetic analogs (e.g., octreotide, lanreotide) are clinically preferred. However, somatostatin is still used in acute settings in some countries. Indications: 

Acute esophageal variceal bleeding

Pancreatic fistulas post-surgery or due to pancreatitis

Gastrointestinal fistulas post-surgery or due to pancreatitis

Insulinoma or functional pancreatic tumors (symptomatic hypoglycemia relief)
